The Refuge is VMC’s most community-oriented program. Open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, The Refuge sees poor and homeless clients on a one-on-one basis by appointment. Under the direction of the Refuge Director, volunteer counselors listen to people’s problems and assist them with solutions. Procuring bus tickets to get to a new job or obtaining assistance with a utility bill are two examples of how VMC helps. Of course, every need is verified and vouchers are used instead of cash. The Refuge program is dedicated to the prevention of homelessness. Refuge volunteers logged in 4,607 hours last year while seeing 4,262 neighbors. Approximately 51% of these neighbors were homeless and the other 49% were marginally housed.
