Resource Center

The Day Room The Volunteer Ministry Center (VMC) was established in 1987 by concerned individuals and churches from the downtown area who observed a growing number of homeless people on the streets during the daytime hours.  The first program was a Day Shelter which provided day time accommodations to the homeless.  Now named the Resource Center, it provides a day time transitional setting for those who are seeking a permanent residence of their own.

Individuals utilizing the Resource Center have declared their decision to move from the streets to a place of their own.  The Resource Center is a membership based program that requires accountability from those it serves.  Each member is required to sign a community agreement and perform a variety of tasks, including chores, on a weekly basis.   As it defines and plots the path of achieving permanent housing, it meets basic needs during the transition from the streets to a place of one’s own.

The VMC Resource Center provides the neighbor with meals, laundry facilities, private showers, classes, etc.  Classes such as anger management and alcohol and drug recovery provide the therapeutic tools necessary to motivate those contemplating housing to move towards taking action.  The Housing Workshop is the portal through which case management and an expanded array of services are made available.
